Event Overview
The NMSU CAMP (College Assistance Migrant Program) sent a delegation of eight CAMP scholars to the 2026 USHLI (United States Hispanic Leadership Institute) National Conference in Chicago in February 2026. Under the theme “Uplifting America’s Emerging Leaders,” the conference provided CAMP students with opportunities to strengthen their leadership skills, expand their professional networks, and connect with nationally recognized leaders, recruiters, policymakers, and educators.
A couple of CAMP students participated in interactive forums at the conference, sharing perspectives shaped by their experiences as first-generation college students from migrant farmworker families. Their participation allowed them to bring the voices and experiences of the CAMP population into conversations focused on leadership, education, culture, and opportunity.
For the CAMP scholars, attending USHLI provided meaningful exposure to inspiring role models and new perspectives while helping them develop confidence, communication, networking, and leadership skills. The experience directly supported CAMP’s mission of helping students from migrant and seasonal farmworker backgrounds successfully complete college degrees while preparing them to become engaged professionals and future leaders in their communities.
Although the delegation was limited to eight students this year, their participation continued NMSU CAMP’s long-standing engagement with this impactful national conference and provided students with an important opportunity to grow as scholars, professionals, and emerging leaders. The experience reinforced the value of creating opportunities for CAMP students to connect their educational journeys with broader leadership and professional development experiences
