Event Overview
There are approximately 2.9 million agricultural workers in the United States, and from March 25 to March 31, 2023, the NMSU CAMP (College Assistance Migrant Program) hosted a Farmworker Awareness Week to raise awareness about the challenges and contributions of these workers. The week included various events, such as a Long-Sleeve Shirt Drive from March 24 to 31, to provide clothing protection to farmworkers, and a Blood Drive on March 27, where students could donate blood and help save lives.
On March 28, the NMSU CAMP Student Showcase allowed CAMP Scholars to share their experiences as farmworker advocates, and on March 29, the program hosted Noche De Película, featuring the movie McFarland USA, which tells the story of a high school cross country team composed of predominantly Mexican-American students.
The week concluded on March 31, which is César Chávez Day, with a film showing at the CAMP office. César Chávez was a prominent civil rights and labor leader who co-founded the United Farm Workers union and advocated for better working conditions and treatment for farmworkers. Through the events of Farmworker Awareness Week, NMSU CAMP aimed to honor the contributions of farmworkers and bring attention to the challenges they face.
