Mariposas Campesinas

Love Letters To Our Farmworkers

This art installation stems from the 2021 16th Annual J. Paul Taylor Social Justice Symposium, “Justice for Farmworkers.” In March 2021, J. Paul Taylor Academy students and the NMSU CAMP Student Council invited community members from the borderlands and beyond to make butterfly paper templates, and to write letters of hope, respect, and appreciation to local farmworkers by honoring them through art. The Mariposas Campesinas art installation was created by local artist and former farmworker and NMSU CAMP student, Jesus del Rio. The final phase of this project will consist of CAMP students and staff distributing these butterflies to farmworkers across southern New Mexico’s agricultural fields to honor them for their dignified labor. These events are in partnership with the NMSU College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), the NMSU CAMP Student Council, the J. Paul Taylor Academy, and NMSU College of Arts and Sciences.

Event Overview
